Another One Hundred Years Of Solitude

For the 7th issue, the original idea came from the novel One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez. In this novel, the story of six generations of Buendía Family, he'd drawn a picture of common people and their daily life out of an exotic village named Macondo, yet perceived by the readers as a surreal and magical tale with different living conditions and background. However, it’s still the reality people face in their real life, as artist Yunyu Ayo Shih was once told by a Colombian friend: “.....every family can tell you outrageous stories and they would all be true. There is nothing magical about it, don’t call it magical, it would be an insult. If you love us, remember that.” The novel becomes a mirror, it reflects the figure of Macondo inside Taiwan with those ridiculous yet familiar craziness in our everyday life. The same place where we born and live now - all those rituals, tales, family histories and the way human beings act - narratives and fictions are hardly be separated. At one point, history and real life would tangle with stories and fantasies, when we look at it in other angles or how we interpret it alternatively, we've forged a new-born story/history. In the issue of ANOTHER ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE, a new novel was built. It’s about the borders, the bloodline, the reality, the FAMILY, and the solitude. How to tell the past is true or not. How things could turn into new figures by being retold or going through a new process by the artists, Between one chapter to another, we’re leaving the space for the readers to enter.

Another One Hundred Years Of Solitude

Para el séptimo número de Waterfall, la idea original surgió de la novela Cien años de soledad de Gabriel García Márquez. En esta novela, la historia de seis generaciones de la familia Buendía, dibuja una imagen de la gente común y su vida cotidiana en un pueblo exótico llamado Macondo, pero los lectores lo percibeb como un cuento surrealista y mágico con diferentes momentos locos de nuestra vida diaria. Sin embargo, la realidad es que las personas se enfrentan en su vida real, como un amigo colombiano le dijo una vez al artista Yunyu Ayo Shih: "... todas las familias pueden contarte historias escandalosas y todas serían ciertas. No tiene nada de mágico, no lo llames mágico, sería un insulto. Si nos amas, recuerda eso ”. La novela se convierte en un espejo, refleja la figura de Macondo dentro de Taiwán con esas locuras ridículas pero familiares en la vida cotidiana Taiwanesa. El mismo lugar donde nacimos y vivimos ahora, todos esos rituales, cuentos, historias familiares y la forma en que actúan los seres humanos, las narraciones y las ficciones apenas se separan. En un momento, la historia y la vida real se enredarían con historias y fantasías, cuando lo miramos desde otros ángulos o cómo lo interpretamos alternativamente, hemos forjado una historia recién creada. En la edición de Another One Hundred Years Of Solitude, se construyó una nueva novela visual. Se trata de jugar entre las fronteras de la realidad, la familia y la soledad. Cómo decir que el pasado es verdadero o no. Cómo las cosas podrían convertirse en nuevas figuras al ser contadas nuevamente o por un nuevo proceso creativo por parte de los artistas invitados a este número. Entre un capítulo y otro, se deja un espacio para que participen el lector.
